People are commonly mistaking that extra pounds can be lost only with a strict diet plan and lots of exercise. In fact, you don’t need to eat anything more special then your regular food.   1. Don’t use food as a replacement for something. We often tend to comfort ourselves with food. When ever we feel bad or depressed we turn to food hoping that it will make the bad feeling go away. The truth is that even after overeating you don’t feel anything better, in fact, you feel even worst.
  2. Eat when you are hungry and not when you are bored. I, for an example, have a problem with this. I often find my self eating or thinking about food in times of boredom. If you have some free time try to put it in a good use. Read a book or go out for a walk.
  3. Don’t skip meals. That will not help you to lose weight. The result of skipping meals will only be slow metabolism, hunger and putting on more weight. Eat when you are hungry but always try to have at least three basic meals.
  4. Flip the order of your meals. Most of us don’t have time to eat a proper breakfast or lunch so we just grab a quick bite. A piece of fruit or something like that. However, we compensate that with a rich dinner. Well, that is the most common mistake. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it should be rich in proteins and carbohydrates, while dinner should be very light. If you don’t have time to make breakfast in the morning, it’s better to prepare it the evening before than to skip it.

Although coffee itself doesn’t contain a lot of calories, adding sugar, milk or cream, or having other types of coffee like latte or cappuccino can cause you to intake more calories without even noticing that.

When you are on a diet your food intake is reduced anyway, so you can’t risk to lose all those precious vitamins and minerals by drinking anything that will make you urinate so often. Another disadvantage of coffee is that it keeps you awake. Although having more wake time means having more time for work or exercise which will help you burn calories, it is proved that being awake more also brings the stronger and more frequent feeling of hunger.

Unhealthy weight loss – anorexia confession

Today, beauty standards are getting higher and higher. The TV, fashion industry, cosmetic industry, they all keep telling us that we are not beautiful enough. If we don’t use certain face cream or a shampoo, if we don’t wear size zero, if we don’t shop for famous brands- we are nobody. No wonder there is so many eating disorder cases. Young girls are trying to look like models not realizing that they are beautiful just the way they are. I know how it is because I’ve been through that. Anorexia, to be precise. Some may think that eating disorders are a silly, made up illnesses. Well, from my experience I have to say that they are wrong.

An eating disorder is not just a physical but also a mental condition. By that I don’t mean that persons with eating disorders are crazy, just that they have a little bit different picture of themselves. You start by planning to loose excess weight and when you do that you still feel overweight. Every time you look at yourself in the mirror you see something that you don’t like and you eat less and less until the quantity of everything you ate during the day is less than what a completely normal person eats for one meal. I, for example lived on 2-3 apples and 1-2 pieces of brown toast with ketchup per day. The feeling of hunger actually made me happy because I knew I was on a good path to loose more kilos. Crazy, huh? You see, person who has anorexia thinks he/she is fat and no matter how many kilos they loose and how skinny they are, they not change the opinion.

Anorexia usually manifests in puberty, during the “identity crisis”. Teenagers are more likely to fall under the influences from outside. They see what’s beautiful on TV and they try to achieve that but somehow in that process they get lost and a normal dieting becomes unhealthy starvation. Complexes and bad self image also play a very important role in all that. Why don’t the parents stop their kids from doing that, you may ask. Well, parents are sometimes so busy working that they don’t notice this until it’s too late. Even if they do notice it before, a person who wants to lose weight will do everything to achieve that, even lie. I ,for example, lied that I ate before they came from work and then I would eat and apple and rush to the gym. Sometimes I would not eat until they come from work and have a few bites just for them to see. I know , it’s wrong for so many reasons and I’m not proud of it, but then my priorities were different.

I got out of it thought, I realized what I was doing to myself on time. The recovery process was not easy but with the help of my family I did it. Some girls never did. You see, most of us tend to believe that dieting has to be painful so we starve ourselves to the limit when we can’t stand that anymore, and then we over eat. Sometimes the desire to eat makes us lie ourselves that we didn’t eat as much as we really did. 1. Don’t say “ I can’t because..”- If you decided to work out don’t change your plans and find excuses. If, for example, you want to go to the gym and your car is broken don’t give up on that plan. Walk to the gym, or take a bus, that way you will spend even more calories. Think about that and not about how it’s difficult to go anywhere without a car. You will be more motivated.

2. Always have a bottle of water by your side. You see, sometimes we mix the signals and think that we are hungry when in reality we are just thirsty. Also, when you have water close by, the chances you will drink a coke or something similar, are less.

3. Make healthy snacks- If you like to have a snack here and there ,use your free time to make healthy snacks. If you don’t have much time so you can’t always have a healthy snack ready in your refrigerator make sure you at least have some nuts and dried or frozen fruits. That way, when you feel like having a snack you will not have the excuse to reach for potato chips or cookies.

4. When in the restaurant go easy on the alcohol. Alcohol does have a lot of calories but having a glass of something with you meal is not so harmful. Pick the alcohol with the least calories and restrict yourself to just one glass. Alcohol makes you feel hungrier than you really ,are so if you drink more you will eat more.

5. Serve the food in a smaller plate. If you put the same portion in a smaller dish you will feel full after the meal. But, if you put the same amount of food in a bigger dish you will still feel a bit hungry after the meal. Why? Well, the brain decides how hungry you are. The size of the plate doesn’t really matter, what matters is how full is the plate. If it’s full your brain calculates that that was a decent meal, but if it’s not full the brain thinks you didn’t eat enough so the feeling of hunger precedes.

-Balance you meals. Make sure you have fruits and vegetables as well as the fats, carbs and proteins. Since carbs and proteins give you the energy necessary for daily activities, breakfast and lunch should have the most of them. Dinner, however, should be light and early, just to keep your stomach working until bed time.

-Don’t skip meals. Skipping meals will not help you loose weight but do completely the opposite. Your metabolism will slow down and your body will try to keep all the calories because “the next meal is God knows when”.

-Spice up your food with chilli peppers. They will make a meal taste better and they are great fat burners because they speed up the metabolism.

-Eat foods rich in fibers (apples, for example). The fibers are hard to process and that creates the feeling of being full for a longer time, plus, it keeps your metabolism in a steady pace because the stomach working all the time trying to process those fibers.

-Eat more times per day. Eating three modest meals plus two snacks is better that eating only three big meals. This way you will not feel hungry between the meals and not feel heavy after the meals.
